El domingo
La tarde del viernes trajo penumbras.
Se hundió el sol al filo del horizonte.
Se derramaron triunfantes las sombras.
La noche tiritaba sin estrellas.
Los dedos de oscuridad se cuelan
por todas las rendijas de mi casa.
El sábado callaban los discípulos.
Se refugiaban en sus aposentos.
La boca se tapaban al llorar.
Pasaron toda aquella noche en vela.
En la negrura de mi noche fría
quiero dormir y el pesar no me deja.
El domingo amaneció despejado.
Las mujeres bajaron al sepulcro.
Volvieron dando voces luminosas:
¡Que no está allí, pues ha resucitado!
Prendo una vela, cuya llama blanca
anuncia que el domingo llegará.
Sunday
Friday evening, the shadows lengthened.
The sun went down behind horizon’s edge.
The shroud of night triumphed over all things.
That night the sky was starless and shivered.
Darkness extends her fingers as they reach
And enter my house through every crevice.
Saturday, the disciples grew silent.
Each sought refuge within their own closet.
As they wept, they covered their trembling mouths.
None of them slept throughout that clouded night.
In the deep blackness of my own cold night,
I long for sleep, but grief keeps me awake.
Sunday, the dawn broke to a cloudless sky.
The women went down to the sepulcher.
They returned the bearers of light-filled news:
He is not there, for lo He is risen!
I light a candle and watch its white flame
Proclaim that for me too Sunday will come.

Ha publicado ocho libros para niños (Penguin Random House Uruguay 2019, 2020, 2021), la colección de cuentos Rumbos (Jade Publishing 2021), el poemario Ese golpe de luz (FlowerSong Press 2020) y el plaquette digital bilingüe El ciclo / The Cycle (Center for Latter-day Saint Arts 2020). Asimismo es autor de la obra Estampas del Libro de Mormón (edición de autor), y participa activamente en la Cofradía de Letras Mormonas. González es oriundo de Montevideo, Uruguay.
Gabriel González Núñez is an Associate Professor of Translation at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He is the author of eight children’s books (Penguin Random House Uruguay 2019, 2020, 2021), a short story collection titled Rumbos (Jade Publishing 2021), a poetry collection titled Ese golpe de luz (FlowerSong Press 2020), and a bilingual digital chapbook titled El ciclo / The Cycle (Center for Latter-day Saint Arts 2020). He is the author of the book Estampas del Libro de Mormón (self-published) and an active member of the Cofradía de Letras Mormonas, a Spanish-language association for Mormon letters. González was born in Montevideo, Uruguay.
